Is Your Core Getting Stronger? 5 Pilates Tests You Can Try Today – Pilates Preston
One of the most common questions I hear in my Pilates classes in Preston is:
“How do I know if my core is actually getting stronger?”
Core strength doesn’t always show up the way people expect. It’s not about having visible abs — it’s about how your body moves, supports your spine, and stabilises you in everyday life.
Pilates focuses on strengthening the deep core muscles, including the transverse abdominis, pelvic floor, diaphragm, and deep spinal muscles. These muscles work like a natural corset around your spine.
The good news is there are some simple ways you can test your progress.
Let’s look at a few easy signs and tests.
1. The 30-Second Plank Test
A plank is a great indicator of core stability.
How to test it:
- Place your forearms on the floor.
- Step your feet back so your body forms a straight line.
- Engage your core by gently drawing your belly button towards your spine.
- Hold for 30 seconds.
What to notice:
- Are your hips dropping?
- Is your lower back arching?
- Can you breathe steadily?
If you can hold a plank without shaking excessively or collapsing, your core is improving.
2. The Single Leg Balance Test
Your core helps stabilise your body when balancing.
How to test it:
- Stand tall.
- Lift one foot off the floor.
- Hold for 20 seconds.
If your core is strong, your body should stay fairly steady rather than wobbling.
To make it harder, try closing your eyes or lifting your arms overhead.
3. The Dead Bug Control Test
This is a classic Pilates control exercise.
How to test it:
- Lie on your back with knees bent at 90 degrees.
- Arms point toward the ceiling.
- Slowly extend one leg and the opposite arm away.
- Return to centre and switch sides.
What to look for:
- Does your lower back stay neutral?
- Does your stomach dome or bulge?
- Can you move slowly with control?
If you can maintain control without your back lifting, your core strength is improving.
4. Notice Your Posture
A stronger core often shows up in better posture.
Ask yourself:
- Do I sit taller without thinking about it?
- Does my back ache less during the day?
- Do I feel more stable when walking?
These are all great signs that your Pilates practice is working.
5. Everyday Activities Feel Easier
Your core supports almost every movement you make.
When your core becomes stronger you may notice:
✔ Easier walking
✔ Better balance
✔ Less lower back discomfort
✔ More control during exercise
✔ Improved confidence in movement
These everyday improvements are often the best signs of real core strength.
Remember: Core Strength Takes Consistency
Like any form of fitness, progress happens gradually.
Doing Pilates 2–3 times per week can significantly improve your core strength, posture, and mobility over time.
The key is quality of movement, not just quantity.
