Have you noticed that the conversation around health and fitness is changing?

For years, the focus was on living longer. Today, experts are talking about something even more important—healthspan.

Healthspan isn’t about how many years we live; it’s about how many of those years we live in good health. It’s about remaining strong enough to carry the shopping, climb the stairs, enjoy holidays, play with grandchildren, get up from the floor with confidence and continue doing the things we love.

As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass, strength and balance if we don’t keep our bodies active. The encouraging news is that regular exercise can help slow these changes and keep us moving well for longer.

Why This Means So Much to Me

This is a subject that’s very close to my heart because I’m 68 years old, and I’ve lived through every decade while working in the health and fitness industry.

I’ve experienced my 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and now my 60s, not just as someone who enjoys exercise but as someone who has taught fitness and Pilates for many years. I’ve seen fitness trends come and go, but one thing has never changed: our bodies thrive when we move them.

When I was younger, fitness was often about working harder, burning calories and keeping up with the latest workout craze. Today, my focus is very different. I want to stay strong, mobile, independent and healthy so I can continue teaching, travelling, enjoying long walks and making the most of every stage of life.

Like many people, I’ve also had setbacks. Recently, I recovered from an injury that reminded me just how important strength, balance and mobility really are. It reinforced something I’ve always believed—exercise isn’t about being perfect. It’s about helping your body recover, adapt and stay resilient.

Strength Is the Key to Healthy Ageing

Strength isn’t just about lifting heavy weights. Functional strength is what helps us live independently.

It helps us:

  • Carry shopping with ease.
  • Improve posture and reduce aches.
  • Protect our joints.
  • Improve balance and reduce the risk of falls.
  • Keep our bones and muscles strong.
  • Make everyday tasks feel easier.
  • Stay confident and active as we grow older.

Every little bit of movement counts.

Why Pilates Supports Your Healthspan

This is one of the reasons I love teaching Pilates.

Pilates builds strength from the inside out. It strengthens your core, improves posture, increases flexibility, develops better balance and helps you move with greater confidence. It’s suitable for beginners and can be adapted for every age and ability.

The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is to help your body keep doing the things you love for as long as possible.

My Message to You

After decades in the fitness industry, I’ve learnt that health isn’t about chasing the latest fad. It’s about creating habits you can maintain for life.

Whether you’re in your 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s or beyond, it’s never too late to become stronger. Every walk, every Pilates class, every stretch and every strengthening exercise is an investment in your future.

My hope is that we don’t just add years to our lives—we add life to our years.

If you’re ready to improve your strength, balance, flexibility and confidence in a friendly and supportive environment, I’d love to welcome you to one of my Pilates classes.

Let’s build strength for longevity together—one movement at a time.
